Hoof Putty — the Natural Nail Hole Filler from andis Hufpflege
Optimal hoof care involves many aspects, including sealing clench groove and old nail holes.
By using Hoof Putty to seal old nail holes and clench grooves after shoeing, you largely prevent dirt and harmful bacteria from entering the nail exit points.
To ensure the hoof looks good after applying Hoof Putty, Andi Hundsmann offers both light and dark versions of the putty. The color is achieved with natural pigments, so like all other products from andis Hufpflege, it is free from artificial dyes and preservatives.
Andreas (Andi) Hundsmann, the farrier behind andis Hufpflege, has been a certified farrier and farriery instructor since 2006. Based on his professional experience, he began several years ago to produce hoof care products in organic quality. He places great importance on ensuring his products are 100% natural and free from preservatives , artificial dyes, and petroleum based carriers .
This includes the nail hole filler. The light/dark (tan and black) putty is available in different forms::

Application and Safety Instructions for Using the Hoof Putty / Nail Hole Filler
When using the hoof putty, ensure that the hoof is clean and dry before application. The putty remains usable for about 6 months after opening; during application, be careful to avoid contamination of the product.
Ingredients of the Hoof Putty:
- beeswax
- Pure and essential oils
- natural resins
- color pigments
The putty is free from artificial dyes and preservatives and, like the other products, is hand-mixed and bottled in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
The Putty Role
The Putty Role comes in a 100% recyclable paper packaging. The putty can be easily pushed out from the bottom and applied to the hoof as usual.
When used sparingly—applying only a thin layer to the nail beds and old nail holes—the putty should last for approximately 90 to 100 hooves, depending on hoof size.
Beeswax — A Natural Product with an Extra Benefit
Beeswax is also popular in the pharmaceutical industry for skin care. It is used in the production of ointments, creams, and pastes due to its antibiotic properties. Beeswax is well-suited for mixing substances that would otherwise be difficult to combine because of its emulsifying properties. It is water-insoluble and has moisturizing qualities, forming a light protective film on the skin or hoof.
Hoof Putty and Glue-On Application of Horseshoes
While the nail hole filler primarily serves to care for the hoof after nailing on a horseshoe, it may occasionally happen that a horse loses a horseshoe and it is not possible to re-nail immediately. Depending on how long ago the putty was applied, it should be noted that oil-based hoof care products can negatively affect the adhesive bond between the hoof and the glue tabs.
For a glue-on application, we always recommend stopping the use of any hoof care product well before the gluing process. Therefore, if you are planning to switch from nailed to glued hoof protection, do not seal old nail holes / clench grooves with the hoof putty just before starting the gluing process.
Hoof Putty — Photos
The putty is used after completing the shoeing process to seal the clench grooves and old nail holes, protecting them from the intrusion of germs.
Horse hooves can be light, dark, or a mix of both, as seen in the Bavarian Warmblood mare Lilli. This is why the nail hole filler is available in both light (tan) and dark (black) versions.
To use the Putty Role, press against the bottom to push the putty out from the top. The Role itself is 100% recyclable and environmentally friendly.
