Hoof Nails for Steel Shoes and Composite Horseshoes – Mustad, Liberty & March

Many farriers swear by their 'favorite nails' – we offer a selection of the most popular brands among our customers: March, Mustad, and of course, Liberty. Perhaps you'll find your own favorite in our range?

Suitable for Steel Shoes and Composite Horseshoes

In principle, you can nail on our composite horseshoes using the same nails as for steel shoes – the only important thing is that the nail head does not slip through the nailing stlot in the horseshoe.

All hoof nails available in our shop have been thoroughly tested by us or our partners for use with our horseshoes. That's why we can confidently recommend them in combination with our products.

Symbolic image of nailed hoof protection – Mustad hoof nails lie on a stone surface next to a composite horseshoe and a steel shoe.

Hoof Nails With and Without Copper Coating

We offer a selection of both uncoated and copper-coated hoof nails, which provide an antibacterial effect to support optimal hoof health. Speaking of hoof health, we also recommend using hoof puttz to seal clench grooves and and nail holes. Using hoof putty helps prevent dirt and germs from entering.

The Ideal Hoof Nail

We are frequently asked which nail size is the right one. That's why we'd like to offer a general recommendation for the March, Mustad, and Liberty nails available in our shop.

Any recommendation we make remotely is based solely on the size of the hoof nail – but many other factors are also crucial when choosing the right nail in the proper size.

Important questions to consider on the path to finding the ideal hoof nail:

  • How thick is the hoof wall ?
  • How much stress is placed on the connection between the hoof and the horseshoe?
  • What type of work does the horse perform?
  • Is a regular nail or a slim nail with reduced splitting effect better for the hoof?
  • Is a copper-coated nail necessary, or is an uncoated nail sufficient?

General Nail Size Recommendation Based on Horseshoe Size

Please note that this should only be considered a rough guideline. Depending on the hoof and individual situation, a different choice may be more suitable. The final decision is at the discretion of the hoof care professional on site.
