Preparation of Hoof and Glue-On Shoe

On this topic, we are in complete agreement with Glue-U – when it comes to gluing, proper barefoot trimming, careful preparation of the hoof, and optimal fitting of the glue-on shoe are essential. Only in this way can it be ensured that the GluShu will stay securely in place for the full shoeing period of 6 to 8 weeks.

1. Perform the barefoot trimming as usual and fit the GluShu to the hoof just like a standard aluminum horseshoe. Make sure that both the glue and the GluShu are at the optimal temperature range of 25°C to 30°C (75–85°F).
2. Clean the hoof thoroughly and lightly roughen the hoof wall to enable a better glue bond. Glue-U notes that premature loss of the glue-on shoe is often due to moisture in this hoof, thus if wet or damp dry the hoof before the application. For degreasing, products such as Glue-U's ShuCleaner are suitable. Be sure not to touch the hoof with bare hands during or after degreasing.
3. Once the hoof is prepared, double-check the GluShu's fit. It should be a good fit incl 3mm glue thickness, not loose. Adjust the shoe where necessary. You can reshape the GluShu as you would do with a normal aluminium horseshoe.

Standard Application Method for Horses

For gluing, Glue-U recommends using an acrylic glue like SHUBOND. When using SHUBOND, make sure the components are thoroughly mixed before you begin working on the hoof. The best way to tell is by checking the color of the glue; SHUBOND Black f.ex will only work properly when it extrudes black.

1. Put a medium bead of glue (approx. 1 cm) to the designated areas on the GluShu.
2. The glue now needs a short moment to activate - it becomes warm or colors mat when activated. To ensure the glue stays where it belongs, it is important not to slide the glue-on shoe onto the hoof,but instead to gently place it on the hoof holding back the side cuffs. Then align the GluShu on the hoof as usual until it is in the correct position.
3. Wrap the freshly glued hoof with wrapping foil. Depending on the temperature, the glue takes about 2 to 4 minutes to cure. Hold the hoof up during this time, and carefully set it down only once the glue is cured.
4. Once cured, you can remove the wrapping foil. Take a close look at the glued shoe and seal each cuff with a thin layer of an acrylic glue like SHUBOND. To allow the sealant to cure properly, wrap the area again with wrapping foil. Once glue is set and wrapping foil removed finish application using smooth side of a hoof rasp.

PRE FIX Method

For horses who cannot hold their feet off the ground due to soreness. For glueing in severe cold circumstances Glue-U recommends the Pre Fix Gluing Method.

1. Apply a medium layer of PRE FIX CA glue (approx. 1 cm thick) along the entire inner edge of the GluShu, and spray the insole of the glue-on shoe with the ACTIVATOR.
2. You can now carefully position the glue-on shoe on the hoof. Gently splay the side cuffs outward, place the GluShu onto the hoof, and align it as usual – but quickly – until it sits in the correct position.
3. Hold the hoof in position for approximately 5 seconds until the PRE FIX CA adhesive has set, then gently lower the hoof to the ground.
4. Splay each cuff outward – for example, using a hoof pick – and inject the required amount of acrylic glue like SHUBOND into each cuff. Wrap the glue-on shoe with hoof wrap to keep it in the correct position until the acrylic glue has fully cured.
5. Set the hoof down and wait at least ten minutes before removing the hoof wrap.

Removal of the GluShu Glue-On Shoe

For removing the GluShu, Glue-U recommends working with the DRAW KNIFE and hoof nippers. Gradually trim off each cuff with the knife, taking care not to damage the hoof wall. Once the cuffs have been removed, you can take off the glue-on shoe using the nippers. Afterwards, remove any remaining glue using a rasp or Hoof Buffer. Please keep in mind that the dust created while grinding the glue can pose health risks.
