HOOFGOLD Hornpads – Targeted Deep Care
for Thrush, Deep Frog Cracks and White Line Disease
“No hoof, no horse” – few sayings describe the importance of healthy hooves more accurately. They provide the foundation for every movement and have a significant impact on a horse’s well-being and performance.
The frog plays a particularly important role. It is an essential part of hoof mechanics and, together with the other hoof structures, supports the natural distribution of pressure within the hoof. When the frog is affected by moisture, dirt or microbial exposure, problems such as thrush, horn deterioration, deep frog cracks or changes in the white line area may develop.
Regular inspections and careful hoof care help identify these changes at an early stage and maintain long-term hoof health.
Thrush is one of the most common hoof problems in horses. Deep frog sulcus, frog cracks and cavities provide ideal conditions for decay. In these difficult-to-reach areas, hoof care products applied only to the surface are often unable to reach the actual problem area effectively.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads have been specially developed for these situations. The ready-to-use pads are inserted directly into the affected areas, providing targeted care for deep-seated problem areas within the hoof. This allows the treatment to work exactly where it is needed.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads for Thrush and Deep Frog Cracks
Thrush often develops when moisture, dirt and microorganisms remain in the frog area for prolonged periods. Horses that regularly stand in wet turnout areas, muddy paddocks or damp bedding are particularly at risk. A high pH value in the stable or a nutritional deficiency may also be contributing factors.
The condition often begins without obvious signs. Over time, however, deep frog grooves may develop, and the horn can become soft and lose its stability. Typical signs include an unpleasant smell, black deposits and increasing deterioration of the frog horn.
While surface-level changes are often easy to reach, deep frog cracks and cavities present a particular challenge. This is exactly where HOOFGOLD Hornpads are used. They are inserted directly into the affected areas and remain in place where intensive hoof care is needed.
This makes the Hornpads particularly suitable for horses with severe thrush, deep frog cracks, cavities or other difficult-to-reach problem areas within the hoof.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads can be used in combination with one of our composite horseshoes. When necessary, the synthetic bar of the horseshoe can be modified to create sufficient space above the affected frog grooves and cavities. This keeps the affected areas accessible and allows the Hornpads to be inserted directly into the problem areas.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads for White Line Disease
Supportive Care for Cavities and Changes in the White Line
White Line Disease is a hoof condition that causes changes in the white line area. Separations, cracks and cavities may develop between the hoof wall and the inner hoof structures. These areas provide favourable conditions for moisture, dirt and microorganisms and should therefore be monitored consistently and treated professionally.
White Line Disease in horses is often not detected until significant cavities or separations have already formed within the hoof. The earlier these changes are identified, the sooner suitable treatment measures can be introduced.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads can provide supportive care for White Line Disease when difficult-to-reach cavities or cracks require targeted treatment. The pads are inserted directly into the affected areas and can help improve hoof hygiene while providing targeted care for damaged horn.
Using HOOFGOLD Hornpads
Targeted Care Where the Problem Develops
Many hoof problems develop in areas that are difficult to inspect from the outside. Deep frog grooves, frog cracks, cavities or changes in the white line provide ideal conditions for microorganisms and may remain unnoticed for a long time.
The key advantage of HOOFGOLD Hornpads is that they can be inserted directly into these problem areas. This keeps the care product exactly where it is needed, allowing it to provide targeted support.
HOOFGOLD Hornpads can help care for affected areas of the hoof and support the hoof’s natural regeneration. They can therefore help create favourable conditions for the formation of healthy, resilient hoof horn.
As a general rule for all hoof conditions, the earlier the cause is identified, the sooner suitable measures can be taken. Hoof problems should always be treated in close consultation with a qualified farrier or veterinarian.

How to Apply HOOFGOLD Hornpads
For the best possible results, the affected areas should be cleaned thoroughly before application. A clean hoof surface makes it easier to insert the pads and helps ensure hygienic conditions.
Preparing the Hoof
- Pick out the hoof thoroughly and remove dirt, manure and loose horn
- Clean the frog and hoof sole
- Clean the affected areas as dry as possible
Applying HOOFGOLD Hornpads
- Remove the Hornpad from the individual sachet and trim it if necessary
- Use a spatula to press it directly into the frog groove, frog crack or cavity
- No additional fixation is required
- Replace the Hornpad approximately every three days; the pad dissolves almost completely
HOOFGOLD Hornpads and Glue-On Horseshoes
At this point, we would like to provide some general advice on using hoof care products in combination with glue-on hoof protection.
Because HOOFGOLD Hornpads are applied specifically to the frog, frog groove or deep cavities, the product does not normally come into contact with the actual bonding surface of the horseshoe.
When glue-on horseshoes are applied correctly, the adhesive bond is therefore generally not expected to be affected. Nevertheless, we recommend avoiding the application of hoof care products directly to areas that will later come into contact with the glue tabs.
Before fitting a glue-on horseshoe, the hoof should be clean, dry and free from residue. In case of doubt, the application should always be discussed with the responsible farrier.

HOOFGOLD Products – Hornpads vs. BlueStuff
Horse owners can choose from various products for the care of thrush, frog cracks and other problem areas within the hoof. HOOFGOLD offers its proven Hornpads and the liquid hoof care product BlueStuff for this purpose. Both forms of application have their advantages and complement each other depending on the area of use.
BlueStuff for Large-Area Application
The liquid BlueStuff is quick and easy to apply. It is particularly suitable for large-area care of the frog, hoof sole or other easily accessible areas of the hoof and is often used for regular hoof hygiene or at the first signs of frog problems.
Hornpads for Deep and Difficult-to-Reach Frog Problems
HOOFGOLD Hornpads are mainly used when deep frog grooves, frog cracks or cavities require targeted care. They are inserted directly into the affected area and remain there for an extended period. This allows the care product to reach areas where liquids naturally have difficulty remaining in place for long periods. Especially in cases of severe thrush, pronounced frog cracks or difficult-to-reach cavities, Hornpads can therefore be a useful addition to conventional hoof care.
Combining Hornpads and BlueStuff Effectively
In practice, HOOFGOLD Hornpads and BlueStuff are often used in sequence. After deep frog cracks or cavities have regenerated, care can be continued with HOOFGOLD BlueStuff to help keep the frog clean over the long term and support regular hoof care.
