Hoof Testers and Claw Testers – Precision for Hoof Examination
Hoof testers, also known as claw testers, are used to localize pressure points, pain areas, and injuries in the hooves or claws of horses and cattle. Especially for these animals, they are a proven diagnostic tool to reliably detect issues like hoof abscesses, bruises, or laminitis.
Our range of hoof testers includes tools from Hauptner, Mustad, and Blacksmith.

Instructions for Using Hoof Testers
The procedure involves several steps: First, the hoof is cleaned thoroughly to remove dirt and small stones. Then the tester is applied to different areas of the hoof — such as the toe, the heels, the quarter wall, the white line, or the bearing edge — and steady pressure is applied to identify pain points. The horse’s behavior gives important clues: If it flinches, pulls the leg back, or shows tension, this may indicate a sensitive or injured area. Comparing both hooves can help detect abnormalities more clearly. If the horse reacts strongly to pressure, it is advisable to stop the examination immediately and consult a veterinarian.
Locating Pain with Hoof Testers: Possible Areas of Use
- in cases of lameness of unknown cause, to identify pain points in the hoof
- after injuries or stumbling, to check for pressure sensitivity
- when a hoof abscess is suspected, for accurate localization
- routine checks before shoeing or trimming
- stress check before competitions, trail rides, or extended use
Safety Information
The hoof testers are intended for diagnostic purposes only and are not treatment tools. Improper use can cause stress or injury. They must be used only by professionals or appropriately trained personnel. Please observe our safety information when working with our products. Also follow the valid safety instructions provided by the respective manufacturer regarding the use of hoof testers.
Types and Models
There are two different designs of hoof testers:
- Viennese style
- English style
| Viennese Style | English Style |
|---|---|
| Asymmetrical design: one jaw is straight, the other is flattened. | Symmetrical design: both jaws have the same shape. |
| Longer handles: provide more leverage and allow stronger, finely controlled pressure. | Shorter handles: compact handling, ideal for controlled examinations in tight spaces. |
Regardless of the design chosen, all hoof testers in our range ensure precise pressure transmission, reliable feedback, and ergonomic handling.
High-Quality Materials
