product description

Knife Sharpeneer, Sharpening Sticks & Files – for Sharp Hoof Knives & Toeing Knives

Depending on the manufacturer, hoof and toeing knives may need to be sharpened before first use, or they may come pre-sharpened and ready to use. In any case, it is essential to maintain and regularly sharpen the blades during use. Dull blades require more force and increase the risk of slipping and injury.

There are several ways to keep a hoof knife sharp for trimming a horse’s hoof. On the one hand, there are power tools such as rotary tools (like the well-known Dremel®) and grinding machines. On the other hand, there are manual sharpening options – including the use of a sharpening steel or honing rod.

Coated vs. Un-coated Sharpening Steel

Honing rod, sharpening steel, knife sharpener – these terms are often used interchangeably. However, the key distinction is whether the tool features an abrasive coating, as this determines its function and sharpening ability.

The uncoated sharpening steel is primarily used to maintain the blade of a hoof knife or loop knife during use. It preserves sharpness by removing burrs and realigning the edge. However, it is not suitable for a primary grind or for sharpening dull blades.

This is where the coated knife sharpener comes into play. Thanks to its abrasive coating , it can actually sharpen the blade. A sharpening steel with a ceramic or diamond coating is suitable both for maintaining a blade’s sharpness and for re-sharpening a dull blade.

While an un-coated sharpening steel primarily smooths out irregularities and removes only minimal material, the coated sharpening steel removes noticeably more material, allowing for more effective blade sharpening.

Sharpening Steels / Honing Rods with Diamond Coating

Most of the honing rods available in our shop are diamond-coated, meaning they have a durable diamond abrasive surface. We carry models from trusted brands such as Dick, Luwex, Save Edge, and Vallorbe.
