product description
Extensions — Adjusting Length and Width of a Horseshoe with Plastic Strips
We offer horseshoes for both small and large hooves. Our size range starts with pony sizes from 50mm and ends with Heavy Duty Shoes of 198mm. Thanks to this wide range of sizes, there is a horseshoe for almost every hoof, which fits reasonably well "straight from the factory".
The precise adjustment to the hoof can be easily achieved on-site in a few steps. However, sometimes no size seems to fit quite right. Irregular hoof shapes often present a challenge for the farrier. If the horseshoe is simply too short or not wide enough, our extensions could be the solution.
In general, it doesn't hurt to have the extensions with you in case something goes wrong during the adjustment of the horseshoe and you end up having ground away too much of the shoe. In this situation, you must either custom-fit another shoe or use the one that's too small. With the help of the extensions, it is possible to salvage the incorrectly adjusted shoe and modify it to fit precisely.
You can think of the extensions as differently shaped synthetic strips or weld-on bars that can be welded onto the horseshoe. They were developed to laterally widen or extend backward a composite or urethane horseshoe.
The extensions will have a neutral beige color in the future — so please don't be surprised if you see product images or videos in which they were still transparent.
Sustainable Product — made from 100% Recycled Plastic
Our extensions are made from regranulated plastic and therefore conserve our resources. The sprues that are left over from our production are collected by type, regranulated by our partner in Germany and then processed into various accessories such as the extensions.

The extensions are plastic strips of various shapes. They come in different forms to adjust the width or length of the horseshoe.
Since the plastic coating of the Heavy Duty Shoes gets thicker depending on the size, we offer both — a version for our regular horseshoes and a version for our Heavy Duty Shoes.
This horseshoe was adjusted to the hoof using our extensions. You may of course add the deeper thread pattern in the extended areas of the shoe.
Variety of Weld-on Bars
Among the welding bars for our regular horseshoes, there are various versions in addition to the Mix variant:
The 10 wedge-shaped weld-on bars are especially well-suited for lateral adjustments. The wedges are approximately 15mm wide, making them compatible with the plastic coating of our regular horseshoes.
The plastic strips are particularly suitable to extend the lenght of a shoe. The version with two heights consists of 5 strips approximately 6mm high and 5 strips approximately 8mm high.
The L variant consists of 10 strips, all approximately 15mm high, making them better suited for larger adjustments.
Application and Safety Guidelines for Modification at Own Discretion - Video
Our composite horseshoes can, in principle, be individually adapted to the respective horse's hoof, much like traditional horseshoes. The extent to which this is possible varies depending on the size of the horseshoe and the desired modification. Please observe our safety guidelines for all work involving our products.
Customizing a Horseshoe in Length and Width to Fit the Horse's Hoof
For a functional horseshoe, the optimal fit is crucial. All details for the optimal adaptation of the horseshoe to the hoof can be found under FAQ → Adjustment to the Hoof.
The extensions are aimed at everyone for whom these adjustments are not sufficient and if no horseshoe seems to fit properly to your horse's hooves.
Use a hot air gun suitable for plastic welding with a reduction nozzle. Ensure adequate ventilation during all plastic welding operations and observe the safety instructions of your hot air device.
The extensions are compatible with almost all horseshoes from our range, whether it's a Standard or Extra version or a horseshoe made from regranulate. Depending on the plastic material used, you may need to adjust the temperature of the hot air device and the rolling speed accordingly.
You can modify our horseshoes in various ways to suit the needs of the horse. However, the use of
modification accessories, the type, and the extent of the modification are always at the discretion
of the on-site farrier.
Depending on the model, there are a few limitations that you should definitely consider:
- If you use an 'Arizona' horseshoe, please note that the options for adjusting its width are very limited due to the protective steel border around the toe. The possibilities for extending the length of the Arizona through our extensions are not affected by the steel border.
- When it comes to our straight bar horseshoes and threaded versions, we generally advise against using the extensions to adjust the length and/or width of the horseshoe. By widening or lengthening these horseshoes, the position of the stud holes and/or the crossbar would be altered in such a way that it could quickly lead to unwanted pressure on sensitive areas of the hoof.
A Step-by-Step Guide to a Perfect Fit for Your Horse's Hooves
Preparation of the Horseshoe
For welding extensions to the horsehoe, we recommend first grinding the outer sides of the shoe to achieve a better form closure.

Preparation of the Extensions
Choose the appropriate weld-on branch of the extensions and test the exact placement on the horseshoe. Mark the required length with a permanent marker. When cutting the weld-on branch, we recommend not cutting directly on the mark; instead, leave some excess material.
For cutting of the weld-on branch, you can use, for example, leather shears, which you can also find in our range of products. Of course, it is also possible to use a hammer and toeing knife to trim the weld-on branch to the desired length.

Start Welding
Ensure the correct positioning of the weld-on branch. If you want to extend the horseshoe, first heat the plastic material in the respective area until it starts to shine. The same principle applies if you want to modify the width of the horseshoe.
Be careful not to overheat the plastic in the area of the metal core. If the plastic material 'flows away', you will have too little material left for a stable weld seam.

Heating the Plastic Coating
Welding the Extensions onto the Horseshoe.
Roll the horseshoe evenly over the synthetic strip, ensuring that the hot air flow is directed correctly.
Based on the plastic material of the horseshoe (Standard/Extra/Regranulate), you need to adjust the rolling speed and temperature accordingly.
After completing the welding, roll the horseshoe over the extended areas and allow the weld seam to cool.

Final Steps
Once you have finished the welding work and the weld seams have cooled down, it's time for the final steps.
Adjust the new outer edges of the horseshoe and ensure to match the height of the extensions to the height of the shoe. If you have the possibility on-site, it is advisable for safety reasons to secure the horseshoe, for example, in a vice. Please ensure to follow all safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer when using the angle grinder and wear appropriate safety equipment.

Special Case: Profiled Horseshoes
For our demonstration, we have used profiled Basic shoe with an optimized price-performance ratio. With a shoe featuring a deeper tread pattern, it is necessary to also adjust the extended area to match the tread pattern of the horseshoe.
Use your angle grinder with a coarse-grained grinding disk to add the tread pattern in the extended areas. Make sure the ground-off synthetic material doesn't clog the nail holes.

The Application of the Extensions — Video
Especially when working with extensions for the first time, it is often very helpful to take a moment to watch the whole process calmly.
For this reason, we have modified one of our horseshoes in length and width, and summarized the entire process for you in a short video.
Take a moment to watch the application of our extensions in the video.
Special Case — Heavy Duty Horseshoes
If you want to modify a Heavy Duty horseshoe, you need to consider that the height of the plastic casing of these horseshoes is slightly higher compared to our regular horseshoes.
For this reason, in addition to regular extensions, there are also HDS (Heavy Duty Series) extensions, which are designed to match the height of the plastic casing of the 198mm horseshoes.
If you are using a size smaller than 178mm, you may need to adjust the height of the extensions after welding to match the height of the horseshoe.

Tips and Tricks
At this point, we would like to share a quick tip with you if you only have to extend the horseshoe minimally.
Minimal Adjustments with Color Strips
For these minimal adjustments, another product has proven to be helpful — our color strips. The color strips are approximately 3mm thick and can be welded to the horseshoe using our popular welding device (but of course, they can also be welded without our welding device). Further information can be found directly with the color strips.
