The right stud wrench— Essential for Changing Studs
Horseshoe studs provide extra grip and traction on slippery surfaces, rough terrain, or for jumping horses. Studs are used wherever more grip is necessary, whether your horse is fitted with conventional horseshoes or our alternative horseshoes with stud hole .
Choosing the right stud wrench is crucial for mounting or changing studs. Depending on the stud model and thread size , there are different options for suitable tools. However, keep in mind that not every wrench option can be used for all stud types or sizes in our range.
Below, you'll find an overview of the studs compatible with your horseshoes and the corresponding wrench or bits for stud installation.
Stud Changing - Suitable stud wrench and bit inserts for our studs – Photos
Hexagonal stud wrenches with handle
This stud wrench offers an easy and quick solution for screwing in and out any of our studs, whether for anti-skid studs with disk, studs for grip in extreme situations, or ICE studs with conical heads. The stud key is reliable and durable, making it an indispensable tool for farriers and riders in daily stable work.
Hexagonal Stud Key Bit Insert
In addition to the classic stud wrench, you can also use a standard cordless drill or bit holder with a bit insert to screw in studs or change horseshoe studs. Please note that we only offer this bit insert for M8 and M10 thread sizes.
Application and Safety Instructions for Stud Changes
Using horseshoe studs increases the risk of injury in herds and to the horse itself. The use and monitoring of studs is the responsibility of the horse owner in collaboration with the farrier. If you choose to use studs, please read and follow our safety instructions to prevent injuries. Further information about the use of studs can also be found in the product descriptions of the respective horseshoes.
Preparing for Stud Installation: Cleaning the Stud Hole
Before screwing in the studs, it is important to ensure that the stud hole in the horseshoe is free of dirt. Only this way a secure fit can be guaranteed.
Dirt in the stud hole could also apply unwanted pressure on the hoof. Therefore, we generally recommend sealing each stud hole with a blind plug or stopper when studs are not in use.
For cleaning the stud hole, we offer a stud hole cleaner bit insert suitable for all thread sizes available in our range. For more details on the stud-changing process, please refer to the product description of the studs you are using.
Alternative horseshoe with Integrated Screw threads in the plastic bar
Our alternative horseshoes with two integrated thread inserts in the plastic bar are compatible with our anti-skid studs with disk in 4mm and 6mm heights. Regular horseshoes require M8 studs, while the thread size of the stud hole changes with the size of the horseshoe for the particularly robust Heavy Duty horseshoes.
The stud holes in these horseshoes are not suitable for frequent stud changes, meaning repeated screwing in and out of studs. It is possible to keep the threads clean during shoeing with blind studs until the actual studs are needed. We’ve prepared a short video for you on switching from blind studs to our horseshoe studs.
For mounting the traction studs in the horseshoe, you can use either a stud wrench or bit insert with the appropriate size, depending on the model.
Anti-skid studs with disk and compatible stud wrench
The Anti-skid studs for better pressure distribution are not suitable for use in traditional horseshoes. They have been specially developed for our horseshoes with a plastic coating.

---|---|---|---|
Anti-skid studs with disk | M8, M10 | 10mm, 12mm | Stud Wrench with handle (M8, M10) Hexagon bit insert (M8, M10) |

Studs for Straight Bar horseshoe with stud holes
Certain disciplines, such as show jumping and eventing, often require the use of taller studs. The forces acting on the horseshoe are significant, so the stud hole must have a secure fit in the metal core to ensure necessary stability.
Our Jumper and Traction models are specially designed for this purpose and feature a stable crossbar with a metal core, similar to conventional straight bar horseshoes.
Durable stud holes for a regular stud change
It’s especially important that taller studs are not used on hard ground for extended periods. For this reason, the stud holes in our Straight Bar horseshoes are designed for repeated insertion and removal of studs. This not only protects the horse’s health but also reduces the risk of injury in the herd when studs are removed after training or competition.
Our Horseshoe Studs for Jumper and Traction Straight Bar Horseshoes
Our range of studs includes various shapes and heights, which are ideal for use with the Jumper, Traction, or even traditional horseshoes.
Whether you’re using studs for show jumping, hunting, driving, or for optimal traction in extreme winter conditions, we offer the right models and the proper stud tools. Depending on the type and thread size of the stud, you can use a stud key or a bit attachment. Below, you will find all the relevant information.
