product description

Soft-Faced Hammers and Mallets in Horseshoeing – Gentle on Toeing Knife, Clinch Cutter & More

Whether featuring a nylon head, buffalo leather, or other materials, the soft-faced hammer is essential in modern horseshoeing. It’s used whenever controlled and joint-friendly impact is needed—such as during riveting, or when working with the toeing knife or clinch groover. Some soft-faced hammers on the market include integrated anti-shock systems. Generally, any soft-faced hammer with striking surfaces made of plastic, rubber, or similar materials will produce less rebound than a regular hammer—while also protecting your tools and materials.

Like many tools in horseshoeing, the dead blow hammer goes by several names. Many simply call it a plastic hammer, while others refer to it as a clinching hammer, especially when used with the clinch cutter. The hammerheads themselves are also often used to name the tool—such as nylon, leather, or wooden hammers, depending on the material used.

In this context, the term wooden mallet comes up, especially when referring to wooden tools. Although it’s not necessarily considered a hammer due to its shape, it serves a similar purpose. The wooden mallet can be used to open clinches or to shorten the bearing edge in combination with a toeing knife.

Which Soft-Faced Hammer is Best – Plastic or Buffalo Leather Head?

When choosing the right soft-faced hammer, it’s not just about the hammerhead material. The shape and quality of the handle are just as important. A good handle needs to be non-slip to ensure safe handling—especially with sweaty hands. At the same time, it should be durable enough to withstand heavy use. While lacquered handles may look appealing, they can increase the risk of slipping when your hands are damp.

Diamond Buffalo Leather Hammer

The proven Diamond leather hammer is made of compressed water buffalo leather. According to the manufacturer, this material is more durable and long-lasting than conventional nylon hammers. Thanks to its ergonomic handle design, the hammer sits comfortably in the hand during work. This leather hammer is especially well-suited for use with a toeing knife, as the leather protects the punch body during striking. Another benefit: According to Diamond, the hammer is extremely resistant to sharp surfaces, making it particularly durable.

Dick Nylon Hammer

The nylon hammer from F. Dick is available in two versions with different head widths – either 35 mm or 40 mm striking width. Matching replacement heads are available separately, making this hammer a durable and long-term investment.

Replacing the Hammer Head

Both Dick hammer variants are compatible with matching replacement heads. To replace the hammer head, fix the hammer securely in a vise. The old insert can then be removed with firm force, as it is held in place by an integrated barb. The new head is pressed in firmly until the barb locks securely into place again.
