Working on the hooves of equidae is potentially dangerous and should therefore only be carried out by trained specialists. To minimize the risks, generally ensure a safe workplace, i.e. also check the surroundings and do not work “pressed against the wall”. Also take care to use personal protective equipment appropriate to the work steps, observe the current safety regulations of the employers' liability insurance associations and only use tested equipment and tools. Use all horseshoeing and hoof care products exclusively for their intended purpose as specified by the manufacturer to avoid injuries to both humans and animals. Improper use can lead to injuries. Most horseshoeing products can be extremely dangerous for young children. Therefore, always store them out of children’s reach.

Air Pump
Condition of the Air Pump
Keep the air pump clean and inspect it for damage before each use. Do not use the pump if there are visible damages to the hose or housing.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Carefully read the user manual before using the air pump to avoid errors and injuries.
Ensure the pump is securely connected to the valve to prevent it from slipping during use. Be cautious to avoid pinching your fingers.
The pump is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of children. Some pumps have small detachable parts (e.g., valve adapters) that could be swallowed.
Additional Information (Links and Downloads)
If you use the air pump to replace the sanding belt on the Hoof Buffer, please also refer to the safety instructions for handling the Hoof Buffer.
Inner Hex Bit Insert / Stud Blanks / Metal Closing Plugs
Usage and Additional Warnings
The Stud blanks are generally not dangerous but are small parts that could be swallowed. Always keep these products out of the reach of children to prevent choking hazards or accidental injuries.
Use them only for their intended purpose and ensure they are properly and securely tightened to avoid injuries, damage, or loss.
Use appropriate tools for assembly or disassembly and follow all manufacturer instructions for safe use.
Mixing Tip
Personal Protective Equipment
The tips themselves are generally not hazardous; however, the substances used with the cartridges often pose significant health risks. Ensure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment and check its integrity before each use.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Inspect the tips for damage before using them with padding material, and only use the ones that are optimally suited for the respective cartridges. Damaged or mismatched mixing mixing tips can result in uncontrolled leakage of the padding material.
Follow the safety instructions for the padding material and ensure that the mixing tips are disposed of properly after use.
Mixing tips are typically delivered in a plastic bag. Keep the bag away from infants and children due to the risk of suffocation.
For specific safety instructions regarding the padding material, please refer to the respective product details.
Hoof Rasps
Personal Protective Equipment
Handling hoof rasps involves risks, as sharp tools always pose a danger of injury.
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment and check its condition for integrity before each use. Wear protective gloves to prevent cuts and safety glasses to protect against potential splinters.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Rasping generates fine particles of horn or metal from the rasp, which can be inhaled. This can irritate the respiratory system and potentially cause respiratory illnesses with prolonged exposure. Depending on the material and manufacturing process of the rasp, additional health risks may be present. Some manufacturers include relevant warnings and safety instructions on their packaging. When rasping a hoof, that was previously shod with a glue-on shoe, consider that particles from adhesive residues may also be released.
Bellota Top SHARP
Warnung as per packaging: This product can expose you to chemicals which are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
Suitable Rasp Handles
Make sure that the rasp handle is suitable for the tang of your rasp to avoid injuries.
Depending on the manufacturer and tang, not all rasp handles may be compatible with your rasp. If we are aware of any limitations, we will let you know. For example, to the best of our knowledge, Equithotics rasp handles are not compatible with Heller eXcel Legend and eXcel Original rasps. However, we also rely on your feedback. Please let us know if you encounter any problems. As a general rule, the safest choice is to use a rasp handle of the same brand as your rasp.
Hoof Knife / Toeing Knife / Interchangeable Blades
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment and check its condition for integrity before each
use. We recommend wearing cut-resistant gloves with a cut protection level of at least 3.
If someone is assisting by lifting the hoof, they should also wear suitable gloves.
Condition of the Tool
Inspect your tool for damage before each use and only use your tool if it is in perfect condition. For hoof knives, ensure that the blade is sufficiently sharp. Depending on the manufacturer, some hoof knives are ready for use upon purchase, while others need to be sharpened before the first use.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Proper use and maintaining the tool in good condition are particularly important for hoof knives to minimize the risk of injury.
Severe injuries can occur if a knife breaks, for example, because the blade has become unstable after repeated sharpening.
Sharpening itself also involves risks. Please also observe the warnings for sharpening tools. It is recommended to sharpen knives by hand or with a specialized grinding machine. Overheating the steel during sharpening can compromise its material properties, making it more prone to breaking.
Special Considerations for Toeing Knives
When working with toeing knives, use a non-rebounding hammer (mallet) or a leather hammer. Do not use a hammer with a metal head to drive the blade, as this can damage the blade. Additionally, working with a hammer that is not non-rebounding increases vibration stress.
Replacement Blades
Only use replacement blades compatible with your knife. When installing the replacement blades, take care to avoid pinching yourself or slipping. Ensure that all screws are tightened appropriately but not over-tightened.
Storage
Knives and other cutting tools should be stored in an appropriate blade or tip cover when not in use.
Pad Material

Make sure to hold the hoof pick securely to avoid slipping while cleaning the hoof. Be gentle when cleaning to prevent injuries to the sole or frog of the horse's hoof.
Hoof Nails / Horseshoe Nails / Copper Nails
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment and check its condition for integrity before each use. Protect your hands with suitable cut-resistant gloves and consider using eye and face protection, as clipping hoof nails may result in flying splinters. A farrier apron is also recommended to protect your legs in case the horse pulls its hoof away.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Choosing the right hoof nail is the responsibility of the farrier. Our horseshoes can be nailed using the same nails as conventional steel shoes. The key consideration is that the nail head must not pass through the nail hole in the shoe. Other typical considerations include: How thick is the hoof wall? How intensely is the connection between hoof and horseshoe strained? How is the horse used?
Ensure all hoof nails and nail remnants are collected after use. A magnetic tool, for example, is helpful for maintaining safety and cleanliness in the stable, as stray metal objects and nail remnants can cause injuries and damage.
When working with copper-coated nails, do not put them in your mouth. Copper is a trace element essential for life. However, in very high concentrations, it can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, colic, or liver damage.
Hoof Stand
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes with toe protection and, if necessary, gloves to prevent injuries during hoof care.
Condition of the Hoof Stand
Inspect the hoof stand and its accessories for damage or wear before each use.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Ensure the hoof stand is placed on a stable, non-slip surface to prevent tipping during use.
Only combine your hoof stand with accessories specifically designed for use with your model. Loose or improperly fitting attachments can increase the risk of injury.
Adjust the height of the hoof stand to ensure an ergonomic, back-friendly working posture.
Safety Glasses
Condition of Protective Equipment
Inspect your personal protective equipment for integrity before each use. Clean the glasses regularly to ensure clear vision and to avoid scratches caused by dirt particles. Cracks, scratches, or other damage can compromise the protective effectiveness.
Clean daily and disinfect periodically according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use is recommended in situations where there is a risk of splashes.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Ensure that the safety glasses fit well and do not slip, as this is essential for effective eye protection. Make sure the headband is neither too loose nor too tight to avoid pressure points or slippage. Use safety glasses designed for the specific task (e.g., protection from dust/particles, chemicals).
If wearing a respirator or hearing protection simultaneously, ensure that these do not interfere with the fit or position of the safety glasses.
Additional Information (Links and Downloads)

→ Ventil Dusk Mask FFP3 NR D: SDS Moldex Ventil Dusk Mask
Hoof Buffer
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment and check its condition for integrity before each use.
Condition of the Tool
Inspect your buffer for any damage before each use and only use the buffer if it is in proper working condition. Additionally, ensure the correct air pressure in the buffer, as improper pressure can result in the sanding belt not being securely held.
Usage and Additional Warnings
When using grinding tools, always follow the markings and safety instructions on the tool and in the accompanying user information. Be mindful of the increased risk of injury from the rotating parts.
Special care must be taken with all horses — whether they are "grind-proof" or not — when working on the hind hooves: Please always have a second person hold the tail! Otherwise, there is a risk of the hoof buffer getting caught in the tail if the horse swats at flies, for example.
Accessories
Only use compatible sanding belts with the buffer.
Abrasive Block / Sanding Block Klingspor

Spikes and Spike Adapters
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment, particularly to protect your hands from cuts.
Condition of the Tool
Inspect your tool for any damage before each use and only use it if it is in proper working condition.
Application
Always use the correct adapter size and appropriate tools for the spike adapters. Refer to the additional information in the Product Description for Spikes.
Add Spikes to your Horseshoe
Spikes increase both the grip of the horseshoe and the risk of injury in the herd — but of course to a different extent than studs do. They are comparable to the tungsten carbide pins in conventional horseshoes.
The exact placement and number of spikes used in the plastic cover is at the discretion of the on-site farrier. Basically, the options differ depending on the type of horseshoe used.
Spikes are only suitable in combination with a composite horseshoe with synthetic cover or a purely synthetic horseshoe. Spikes are not suitable for use in steel shoes. Spikes must not be screwed directly into the hoof.
Risk due to Incorrect Application / Position of the Spikes
To avoid pressure on sensitive areas of the hoof, the spikes should be fitted in the plastic cover in the
area of the bearing edge of the hoof wall.
Under no circumstances should the spikes be screwed in too far inwards, i.e. under the sole of the hoof. If
the spike is too close to the edge of the horseshoe, the plastic may tear out.
If the spike is not screwed in far enough, it is easy to lose and also poses a risk of injury to humans and
horses. If the spike is screwed in too far, it does not provide any additional grip and there is a risk of
the
thread of the spike breaking through the hoof side of the horseshoe.
To ensure a reliable grip, the spike should not be overtightened.
Additional Information (Links and Downloads)
If you are using the spikes in combination with our horseshoes, please refer to our Safety Information.
Bits, Stud Hole Cleaner and Compatible Accessories / Tools
Personal Protective Equipment
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment suitable for the task, as there is always a risk of slipping or small splinters flying in your direction during these operations.
Condition of the Tool
Inspect your tool for any damage before each use and only use it if it is in proper working condition.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Only use the products for their intended purpose as specified by the manufacturer.
Use only compatible bit inserts with your tools, and ensure the bit is securely fastened in the tool to prevent injuries caused by slipping or bits that are loose or fall out.
Ensure the wrench size or thread size always matches the product you intend to assemble.
For all screw connections, avoid overtightening. Tighten (blind) studs securely, but only enough to ensure they are stable and secure. Overtightening can damage the thread in the horseshoe or the (blind) stud itself.

Warning: After sharpening, knives or blades are particularly sharp. Handle with extra caution when testing the sharpness or during subsequent use.
Brushes (Wire Brushes and File Brushes)
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you wear appropriate personal protective equipment and check its condition for integrity before each use.
Tool Condition
Inspect your tools for damage before every use and only work with them if they are in perfect condition.
Application
The file brush with steel bristles is designed for cleaning dirty hoof rasps. It is not suitable for use on the hoof itself.
Wire brushes with brass bristles are suitable for cleaning hooves and horseshoes.
Usage and Additional Warnings
Broken bristles from either type of brush can pose safety risks, including injuries to your skin and eyes. Direct contact with the bristles may cause abrasions or small cuts, especially if handled improperly.
Excessive pressure or improper use of the brush can damage the surface being cleaned, which can be particularly problematic for sensitive surfaces like the horse's hoof.
Fiber Discs - PFERD COMBICLICK SYSTEM
Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure you use appropriate personal protective equipment. Depending on the surfaces being sanded, gloves, eye protection, and/or respirator masks may be required.
Usage and Additional Warnings
When using sanding tools, always follow the markings and safety instructions provided on the tool and in the accompanying user manual. Be mindful of the increased risk of injury from rotating parts.
Special care must be taken with all horses — whether they are "grind-proof" or not — when working on the hind hooves: Please always have a second person hold the tail! Otherwise, there is a risk of the hoof buffer getting caught in the tail if the horse swats at flies, for example.

Work Gloves / Protective Gloves / Disposable Gloves
Gloves – Protection or Additional Risk?
The risk assessment and final decision on whether to wear protective gloves, such as work gloves or disposable gloves, along with the associated risks, lie with the hoof care professional, rider, or horse owner.
The risk of gloves being pulled into machinery typically arises during activities involving drills, band saws, circular saws, and other hand-operated machines with rotating parts. With these tools, there is a danger that the gloves could be caught by the rotating surfaces, leading to injuries.
It is important to note that for some products (e.g., hoof care, repairs, or padding), appropriate gloves are essential.
