The reasons for using padding material are diverse. Depending on why you've opted for a horseshoe with padding material and the type of horseshoe you plan to use, there are various padding materials to choose from. One option is a silicone pad material, such as the SHUSIL by glue-u.
Applications
SHUSIL can be a good option, if additional cushioning and protection for the sole or frog are required. SHUSIL might also be useful for laminitis horses to ease pressure on the toe area or for horses with low heels to support this area of the hoof.
glue-u's silicone pad materials are acid free and non toxic, making them, according to glue-u, even suitable for wound treatment. However, glue-u advises against using the silicone pad material on horses with White Line Disease , as the altered pressure distribution might create more damage to the WLD hoofwall.
Which hoof cushion is best suited for the horse cannot be determined from a distance. As a farrier or hoof care professional, you are the most qualified to make the appropriate selection.
SHUSIL - The Range of Silicone Pad Materials from glue-u
The SHUSIL by glue-u is available in three different durometers. Although the differences may appear minimal at first glance, selecting the right level of firmness for the horse is essential. SHUSIL Soft, with a shore A10, is an extremely soft padding material, while SHUSIL Medium-Soft has a Shore A20 and offers moderate firmness. The Medium variant, currently the firmest silicone pad material, has a durometer of Shore A30.

General Application and Safety Instructions — Video
Please pay attention to our safety Instructions when working with our synthetic horseshoes and associated products, and also consider the additional safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. SHUSIL is classified as non-hazardous in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP); however, it is essential to observe the precautions and occupational safety regulations that apply to the handling of silicones. Ensure adequate ventilation and wear personal protective equipment. SHUSIL is intended for professional use only, as cushioning applications should be carried out by qualified personnel, specifically trained farriers and veterinarians who are familiar with the product.
Working with SHUSIL
SHUSIL does not stick, therefore you can only combine it with a composite shoe with a closed sole area or a steel shoe with pad.
SHUSIL is available in various durometers. . Since different silicones bond together during curing, it is possible to combine various durometers to fill up one horseshoe. For instance, in case of a laminitic horse, it may be beneficial to use a softer material in the toe area and a slightly firmer one in the heel area.
Depending on the humidity level, the curing time at room temperature is approximately 3 to 4 minutes. You can shorten the curing time by warming the hoof cushion to body temperature. This can be particularly helpful in extreme winter conditions, as warming the silicone before application on the hoof may improve performance. There are specialized heating devices available for the proper warming of the cartridges.

Closing the Sole Area of Composite Horseshoes
Of course, we also offer a clipped composite horseshoe with a closed sole area. However, if you require a different shape or size, or if you depend on special features such as stud holes, you can modify the shoe and close the open sole area.
To achieve this, you have the option to work with our synthetic grid plates, or you can use our newly developed Hoof Sole Protector (HSP).
The Hoof Sole Protector (HSP) is desined in different sizes, to fit the inner hole of our round and oval horseshoes. For more details about the HSP, please refer to the product description. Since the silicone is relatively viscous, it may be advisable to drill a small hole in the HSP to facilitate easier injection of the pad material.
Application of Silicone Pad Materials with Glue-On Shoes
When injecting the silicone pad material, make sure that no silicone seeps towards the glue-on tabs. This could negatively impact the stability of the adhesive bond.
