product description

KERALIT® Undercover — Hoof Care Paste to Prevent Keratin Degradation

Regardless of whether the horse is unshod or shod: KERALIT® Undercover - a hoof care paste with a long-term effect - is a good choice for preventing horn decomposition processes and supporting treatment in acute cases.

Areas of Application for KERALIT® Undercover Hoof Care Paste

Whether used preventively or for support in acute cases, KERALIT® undercover is ideal for addressing horn degradation processes in the area of the white line , hoof sole, bar and frog. In addition to preventing keratin degradation, other potential applications include:

  • decay in the area of the white line
  • White Line Disease — decomposition of the white line caused by anaerobic bacteria and fungi
  • under the horseshoe in the case of an unstable hoof wall
  • under the horseshoe to protect against decay
  • after a hoof abscess , once the channel has been opened and dried
  • keratoma and hollow hoof walls
  • For the treatment of thrush in combination with Strahl-Liquide .

Application and Safety Instructions for Working with KERALIT® Undercover

KERALIT® Undercover hoof care paste can cause skin irritations, severe eye irritations. In case of contact with skin wash with water and soap. In case of contact with eyes rinse thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed: call the emergency number 112. For external use on horn and hooves only. For more details, please visit the manufacturer's website. If using KERALIT® Undercover with our horseshoes, please follow our safety instructions.

Applying KERALIT® Undercover

Perform the trimming as usual. Remove any decayed or loose horn material. For deeper cracks, it is advisable to scrape them with a hoof nail, or similar tool, to remove as much of the decayed material as possible.

The subsequent application of the undercover hoof care paste is very straightforward. Simply apply the paste into the created cavities. In their product flyer, KERALIT® recommends to cover the fillign with tow (oakum) in case of very large cavities, to help the hoof care paste stay in place longer.

We recommend wearing disposable gloves while working with the hoof care paste.

You can combine KERALIT® undercover in combination with an open or closed horseshoe - thate means a composite shoe with a closed sole area or a horseshoe combined with a pad or silicone insert f.ex. Otherwise, you can carry out the shoeing work as usual.

KERALIT® advises that when using pads and silicone inserts, you should also apply a thin layer of KERALIT® undercover to the sole and the central / lateral sulci beforehand.

The hoof environment beneath the horseshoe or pad can be influenced by Keralit® Undercover in such a way that horn decomposition processes, such as those caused by ammonia or other microorganisms , may be prevented.

The farrier applies Keralit Undercover to the hoof in the area of the white line.
The farrier applies Keralit Undercover to the central grooves.

Long-Lasting Hoof Care Paste

The major advantage of KERALIT® Undercover is that its active ingredients are released over a period of 6-8 weeks, typically covering the entire shoeing period.

KERALIT® Undercover for Barefoot Horses

The hoof care paste can be used not only under the shoe but has also proven effective for barefoot horses, such as those kept in open stables, in treating and preventing horn degradation processes in the frog area. Because the hoof care paste adheres relatively well to the grooves even in wet conditions, it can remain effective for several days and does not need to be applied daily like some other hoof care products.

Using KERALIT® Undercover in Combination with a Glued Horseshoe

When gluing a horseshoe, you should be cautious when using hoof care products simultaneously. Many hoof care products, especially those containing oils, can negatively impact the adhesive bond, so active treatment should be discontinued in advance.

In the case of KERALIT® Undercover hoof care paste, this is not an issue—on the contrary, the paste is usually applied just before shoeing. Therefore, it is important to be precise about where the paste is applied. Apply Undercover only if the paste does not come into contact with the area where the glue-on tabs will later be applied. Therefore, each case should be evaluated individually. Even when the hoof care paste is applied only to the underside of the hoof, it is important to ensure that no paste is pushed outward toward the glue-on tabs during the application of the horseshoe.

A general statement about the combination of KERALIT® Undercover and a glue-on horsehoe is therefore difficult to make.
