product description

Magic Cushion® Hoof Packing — Cooling and Soothing for Stressed Hooves

Magic Cushion® by Absorbine® is used as a hoof pack to help heavily stressed and overheated hooves quickly and effectively. Magic Cushion® has a cooling effect and can lower the hoof temperature in a short time. According to Absorbine®, the cooling and temperature-reducing effect occurs within just one hour. This can help to provide your horse with quick relief in the event of acute problems or after a strenuous training session.

The ingredients of Magic Cushion® are of purely natural origin and have been selected to have an antiseptic effect and thus combat inflammation. Magic Cushion® can therefore help your horse's hoof to recover and heal.

The hoof packing can provide quick and lasting relief, especially for conditions such as laminitis and other forms of pododermatitis . In these cases, the cooling effect of Magic Cushion® can be perceived as particularly pleasant by the horse. The hoof pack has also proven to be particularly helpful for bruised hooves or blunt injuries. Magic Cushion® was developed by a vet and has become a product trusted by many top farriers in the USA, according to the manufacturer Absorbine®.

Product Variants

The cooling Hooflex® hoof pack from Absorbine® is available in two different versions:

  • Magic Cushion® Hoof Packing
  • Magic Cushion® Xtreme — Performance Strength Hoof Packing

Magic Cushion® by Absorbine® is the ideal hoof pack for stressed and overheated horse hooves. It has a cooling effect and regulates the temperature, while at the same time having anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It can therefore be a good choice for conditions such as laminitis and other forms of pododermatitis.

Magic Cushion® Xtreme contains the same active ingredients as the regular version; the only difference is the higher dosage of active ingredients.

Absorbine® recommends using the Xtreme version especially for highly stressed performance horses, as it provides even faster and stronger relief for competitive horses than Magic Cushion®.

Application and Safety Instructions for the Use of Magic Cushion®

The Hooflex® hoof packing Magic Cushion® and Magic Cushion® Xtreme is very easy to use. It can be used on both shod and unshod horses. Please note, however, that there are different procedures for attaching the pack to the horse's hoof depending on the hoof situation. Even though Magic Cushion® and Magic Cushion® Xtreme are based on ingredients of natural origin, please follow the safety instructions of the manufacturer Absorbine®.

Flammable material. Keep out of reach of children and other animals. Magic Cushion® is not intended for use on humans and may only be used for external application on animals. Avoid contact with the eyes or mucous membranes . Do not apply to irritated areas of skin. If excessive irritation occurs, discontinue use. Avoid prolonged contact of the product with the skin above the hoof.

You will find the currently valid version of the Absorbine® safety information on the packaging.

Danger. Flammable liquid and vapor. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. Causes skin irritation. May cause an allergic skin reaction. Causes serious eye irritation. Toxic to aquatic organisms, with long lasting effects. In case of medical emergency: Have product container or label ready. Keep Magic Cushion® out of the reach of children. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition. Do not smoke.
If SWALLOWED: Call a poison control center or doctor immediately. DO NOT induce vomiting.
Keep the container sealed.

The Effect of Magic Cushion® on the Horse's Hoof

The main function of Magic Cushion® is its cooling and antiseptic effect; depending on the hoof situation and planned application, it can either be used as a hoof pack for treatment in acute cases every 24-48 hours, or also used like a cushion when shoeing in combination with e.g. sheep's wool. In this case, it first cools the hoof and then acts as a cushioning material to give the hoof additional support and completely close the sole.

Preparing the Hoof and Applying Magic Cushion®

The hoof must be thoroughly cleaned before applying the hoof pack. You can find a sturdy hoof scraper with brush for this purpose in our range under "Modification and Accessories" in our store.

In order for the Magic Cushion® to develop its cooling effect optimally, the pack must be in direct contact with the hoof sole and the frog .

After cleaning the hoof, you can apply the hoof pack by hand to the entire sole of the hoof and the frog. As indicated in the Absorbine® safety instructions, please make absolutely sure that the pack does not get onto the skin above the hoof. The eyes, mucous membranes and irritated areas of skin must also not come into contact with Magic Cushion®.

We therefore recommend wearing gloves when applying the hoof pack. You can also buy suitable disposable gloves from us. These can be found under "Modification and Accessories".

Absorbine® recommends applying the pack approx. ½ inch (equivalent to approx. 1.27cm) thick. Magic Cushion® has a slightly sticky, spongy texture. This allows the hoof packing to adapt perfectly to the horse's sole. Excess material can be easily removed with isopropanol.

Magic Cushion® — the Application as Hoof Pack

The cooling effect of Magic Cushion® lasts for 24-48 hours. Absorbine® has tested and documented the temperature-reducing effect of both hoof packs on the hoof. The hoof temperature was documented before application, one hour after application, four hours and 24 hours after application of Magic Cushion®. The result was that both Magic Cushion® and Magic Cushion® Xtreme significantly reduced the hoof temperature within one hour and cooled the hoof even further during the following 24 hours after application. For the treatment of acute problems, the application of the hoof pack should therefore be repeated at appropriate intervals.

Magic Cushion® as Hoof Pack on the Shod Hoof

After application, Absorbine® recommends placing the hoof treated with Magic Cushion® in sawdust to fix the hoof packing. The sawdust adhering to the lower surface of the hoof packing serves to fix the packing.

Magic Cushion® as Hoof Pack on the Bare Hoof

For horses that are not shod, we recommend taping the hoof after applying the hoof pack. To do this, apply Magic Cushion® as described and then fix it in place with some sheep's wool or absorbent cotton, for example. You can then securely tape the pack in place.

Magic Cushion® as Part of the Horseshoeing Solution

Magic Cushion® can not only be used as a hoof pack, but can be used during the entire shoeing cycle with pad and horseshoe. Absorbine® recommends applying Magic Cushion® approx. ½ inch (approx. 1.27cm) thick to the hoof before nailing or gluing, then applying a pad and then shoeing.

Farrier prepares a hoof with Magic Cushion and sheep's wool for shoeing with an alternative horseshoe with a closed sole surface

We like to use a combination of Magic Cushion® and sheep's wool. If you would like to use Magic Cushion® for this purpose, we recommend choosing one of our shoeing models with a closed sole area or a horseshoe and a corresponding inlay plate. The mass of Magic Cushion® and e.g. sheep's wool remains reliably in place.

If you want to glue a horse shoe with padding material, make sure that the padding material does not escape sideways in the direction of the adhesive tabs. This could have a negative effect on the stability of the adhesive bond.

During the first 24-48 hours after shoeing, Magic Cushion® reduces the hoof temperature; thereafter, the compound serves to completely seal and protect the sole of the hoof like other cushioning materials.

Whether you are a farrier or a horse owner — when using Magic Cushion® in combination with our horseshoes, it is important that you read and follow our safety instructions regarding the use of our products to avoid injury to humans and horses.

Tips & Tricks

Magic Cushion® is supplied in different containers depending on the version and amount of contents. If your container has a screw cap, we have a little tip for you: to prevent the screw cap from sticking after resealing, you can apply a little petroleum jelly to the edge of the container before screwing the cap on. This makes it easy to open the lid the next time you use the pack without it sticking.
