product description

KERALIT® HUF-FESTIGER (Hoof Stabilizer) — Protects, Nurtures, and Stabilizes

Poor horn quality, cracked horn walls, and rot in the nail area — KERALIT® Hoof Stabilizer addresses a wide range of issues. While many initially turn to dietary supplements, KERALIT® believes that feed supplements alone are not sufficient to prevent horn damage and improve hoof conditions. For horses that are unshod , it is crucial to maintain and strengthen the horn around the bearing edge . Supplements aid in the formation of new horn material, but it takes a long time for this to grow down to the bearing edge. According to KERALIT®, additional nutrients from supplements have no positive impact on the quality of 'old horn', as it consists of 'dead cell material ' that cannot be reached by nutrients in the bloodstream.

A common concern with hoof strengtheners is that they might negatively affect the elasticity of the hoof capsule by causing excessive hardening or drying of the horn. However, KERALIT® Hoof Stabilizer stabilizes only the keratin molecules directly on the horn's surface, preventing unnatural drying or hardening. Unlike many oils or fats, it does not leave a water-resistant coating on the horn.

Applications

According to the packaging information, KERALIT® Hoof Stabilizer is recommended by farriers and veterinarians and is ideal for:

  • horses with cracked and brittle hoof horn
  • horses with low heels
  • unshod horses
  • horses with sensitive soles
  • horses with deteriorated horn
  • horses with rot in the white line
  • breeding mares
  • foals
  • ponies
  • other hoofed animals

KERALIT® HUF-FESTIGER for Shod Horses

When a horse is shod, there is another area that is at risk - the nail holes. The nail channels provide a surface for fungi and bacteria to attack, but the ammonia-containing moisture in the bedding can also contribute to horn decomposition in the nail channels. The consequences can be horn wall defects, loose horseshoes, but also pododermatitis - in some cases it can also mean that nailing is no longer possible.

KERALIT® HUF-FESTIGER for Unshod Horses

As a manufacturer of hoof shoes, we are clear: if going barefoot works, it is the optimal solution! However, it doesn't always work out with unshod horses. One challenge for unshod horses is that the horn does not grow back as quickly as it wears down. This creates an imbalance between horn growth and wear. If the white line is damaged by stones or brittle areas, it can lead to severe issues, including pododermatitis in extreme cases. Hooves are heavily stressed by often harsh ground conditions in paddocks and during riding, as well as negative factors like ammonia, and require additional care.

This is where KERALIT® Hoof Stabilizer comes into play. It is designed to strengthen the bearing edge, sole, and white line. For unshod horses with slow horn growth or generally poor horn quality, treating with KERALIT® Hoof Stabilizer can help reduce abrasion.
