Safe Use and Handling of Diisocyanates

As from 24 August 2023, anybody working with urethanes will be required to complete a training on the safe use of diisocyanates. This regulation also applies to the use of SHUPACK. As a seller, we cannot guarantee that the necessary training for using the product has been completed. Especially since many end customers purchase the products directly from us, and the farrier applies them afterward. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure compliance with the applicable regulations.

Working with SHUPACK

At room temperature, the curing time of SHUPACK is approximately 60 seconds. In colder conditions, it extends to around 90 seconds, while in very high temperatures, it can shorten to about 30 seconds. In general, temperature and humidity can affect the performance of any two-component product. Under ideal conditions, the urethane pad will be completely clear after curing; if it appears slightly milky, it is usually due to moisture.

Better Results with Mesh

While SHUPACK adheres to the hoof sole, it is recommended to use mesh material for better results, as it helps distribute the forces acting on the hoof more evenly across the mesh and urethane pad.

Here’s a tip from glue-u:
When using mesh, try to create a wave pattern; the mesh should not lie flat inside the horseshoe but instead have a slightly concave shape. For further details, check out the official Tips & Tricks video.

Differences When Working with an Alternative Horseshoe

We have linked the official instruction video from glue-u, which demonstrates the application of the urethane pad in combination with a steel shoe and mesh. A self-adhesive foam pad is used for this purpose; however, with our horseshoes that have a plastic coating, we recommend injecting the urethane pad while the hoof is lifted. You can seal the sole area of our horseshoes using glue-u’s mesh material or our specially designed Hoof Sole Protector, depending on what you have available and what seems most appropriate for the situation.

Since SHUPACK is quite fluid, it’s advisable to wrap the shod/glued hoof with stretch film to prevent the urethane pad material from leaking out laterally. Special care should be taken, especially with glue-on horseshoes, as any leaking pad material could negatively affect the adhesive bond.
