product description

blueline® Weld-On Clips – Flexible Quarter and Toe Clip Options

The blueline® weld-on clips offer a simple and flexible way to retrofit synthetic horseshoes with quarter clips or toe clips. Originally developed for blueline® horseshoes, they can also be used easily with our synthetic and composite horseshoes .

Metal vs. Synthetic Material

As with horseshoes, there are good reasons to choose either metal or synthetic clips. The right option depends on the properties required in each individual situation. Synthetic clips can help reduce the risk of injury, but they are less durable than metal clips.

With fully synthetic horseshoes, only synthetic clips can be used. Composite horseshoes, on the other hand, give you a choice between integrated metal quarter clips and synthetic clips that can be welded on afterwards. A toe clip can also be added if required.

As always, our main goal is to give you several options so you can find the right solution for every horse.

Summer and Winter Versions

For optimal welding properties, the blueline® weld-on clips are available in summer and winter versions. At surrounding temperatures above 10°C, we recommend the summer version; below 10°C, the winter version is the better choice. This keeps the material easy to work with and allows it to be shaped cleanly to match the horseshoe.

Different Sizes

The weld-on clips are available in several sizes and can be selected to match the respective horseshoe size or intended use.

Flexible Use of blueline® Weld-On Clips

The weld-on clips are available in different sizes and can be welded onto the horseshoe as needed. They can be used as either quarter clips or toe clips. For a toe dragger , it can also be helpful to choose a slightly larger clip and weld it onto the toe area to help prevent excessive wear through the toe of the hoof.

Adjusting the Horseshoe – What to Keep in Mind

Adjust the horseshoe to the hoof width and hoof shape as usual. If you want to glue the horseshoe on, first grind off any existing knob arrays , then weld on the clips, and only then weld-on the glue tabs.
Please also note the following:

  • Follow the safety instructions when working with synthetic materials and wear suitable personal protective equipment .
  • With the blueline® horseshoe, both the synthetic outer layer and the synthetic core can be welded to the weld-on clips.
  • The synthetic materials used in our products can be welded to the weld-on clips.
  • For products from other manufacturers, we cannot assess whether the synthetic materials used are suitable for welding.
  • When working with composite horseshoes, do not expose the metal core in the welding area.
  • The Arizona cannot be combined with the weld-on clips because of its steel edge in the toe area.
  • To set the clip into the hoof wall , the horseshoe can be notched using hoof nippers, a belt grinder or an angle grinder.

Welding on the Clips – Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Follow the safety instructions for synthetic materials and your heat gun. Wear suitable protective equipment.
  • Use a reduction nozzle that is suitable for your heat gun.
  • Select the appropriate clip size based on the horseshoe size and intended use.
  • Select the clip version according to the ambient temperature during welding: use the winter version below 10°C and the summer version above 10°C.
  • Use the integrated welding aids to position the clip more easily on the horseshoe and hold it in place during welding.
  • Remove the welding aid if you want to position a glue tab directly next to the clip – either cut it off beforehand or grind it off afterwards.
  • Mark the exact position of the clips on the horseshoe.
  • Lightly preheat the clip and the horseshoe in the intended welding area.
  • Make sure the entire clip is warm and slightly flexible so that it can follow the curve of the horseshoe.
  • Heat the welding surfaces on the horseshoe and the clip to welding temperature and weld the two parts together.
  • Allow the weld to cool completely.
  • Do not quench the welded area with cold water, as this can make the synthetic material brittle.
  • After the clip has cooled, reheat it above the weld line to adjust its angle to the hoof wall.
