Studs for Nordic Countries
One major advantage of producing our studs, as well as our horseshoes, in our own facility in the Bavarian Forest is that we can respond to customer feedback. Of course, it’s not possible to fulfill every request, but when we see a growing demand for a specific product, we will do our best to include it in our range.
This is precisely the background behind these new studs. They are our response to customer feedback that we’ve received from Iceland, among other places. Particularly in Iceland and other Nordic countries , horseshoes need to be equipped with higher studs during the winter season. A dangerous combination of ice and snow makes riding in the Nordic countries a risky endeavor and we understand that our 4mm and 6mm studs provide insufficient grip for horses in these regions.
Until now, the only option was to equip our Jumper or HDS Traction with higher studs. However, a sturdy straight bar shoe is not always the right choice for the horse. For this reason, the new 'Nordic' stud with disk has been developed specifically for these regions.
The Right Ground Conditions
The 'Nordic' stud with disk is approximately 10mm high and designed for use in our horseshoes with stud holes that are fixated in the plastic coating, provided the stud can sink completely into the ground at all times. Therefore, attention must be paid to suitable ground conditions in the field, paddock, and stable.
If the stud cannot fully sink into the ground, it may compromise the stability of the horseshoe and the horse's health in the long term.
Permanent Stud Application
Composite Horseshoes that can be equipped with the 'Nordic' studs are not designed for regular stud changes. That means that you cannot screw the studs in and out multiple times. Of course, you can protect the stud hole with a blank stud until winter sets in and insert the studs only when the ground conditions are appropriate. The same applies at the end of winter. However, it is not possible to screw in the 'Nordic' studs only as needed, as frequent screwing in and out can compromise the stability of the thread inserts in the plastic coating of the horseshoe.
'Nordic' Studs for Better Grip on Ice and Snow
The 'Nordic'studs with disk were developed for our horseshoes with stud holes in the plastic coating. The approximately 2mm-high disk helps to distribute the pressure more evenly across the hoof.
The “Nordic” studs are compatible with all clipped and threaded horseshoes with threads embedded in the plastic coating, including the regular model, HDS, and the Snow Edition . Please note the thread size of your horseshoe.
The stud hole in the horseshoe should always be protected from dirt. Metal or plastic closing plugs can act as blank studs until the 'Nordic' studs are installed.
Application and Safety Guidelines for Using the 'Nordic' Studs – Video
The use of studs increases the risk of injury within a herd and for the horse itself. The responsibility for the use of studs and their monitoring during application lies with the farrier and the horse owner.
Several Safety Aspects Must be Considered when Using Studs:
- Studs increase the risk of injuries in the herd. Always coordinate the use of studs, especially cone-shaped studs like the 'Nordic' studs, with the stable owner and other horse owners.
- The horseshoe must be perfectly adjusted to the hoof to ensure that the stud is in the right position below the hoof.
- Note that the 'Nordic' studs are not suitable for use on hard surfaces. They must be able to fully sink into the ground at all times.
- Regularly check the horseshoe, quarter clips, and the positioning of the studs during the shoeing period. A tilted stud indicates that the threaded insert in the plastic coating is no longer properly aligned.
Installing the 'Nordic' Studs in Composite Horseshoes
We encourage you to watch the video on the application of our anti-skid studs with disk, as the process is identical for both the anti-skid studs and the 'Nordic' studs.
If you decide to use studs for additional grip, please read and follow our safety guidelines to prevent injuries. Additional information on the use of studs for a better grip can also be found in the respective product descriptions.

| Application Notes |
The use of Nordic studs is at your own discretion. It should be adapted to ground conditions,
riding discipline, and safety within the herd. The horseshoes for which the Nordic stud is intended are not designed for frequent stud changes. Use socket set screws or closure plugs until the permanent use of the "Nordic" studs. These placeholders keep the thread clean, make it easier to screw in the studs later, and contribute to the stability of the threaded insert. If dirt is repeatedly pressed into the threaded hole instead, this can lead to unwanted pressure on the hoof. |

| Risk of Injury |
Using cone-shaped studs increases the risk of injury.
We do not assume liability for any damages that may occur. Using studs on hard surfaces can impact the horse's health and the stability of the horseshoe. While the 'Nordic' stud provides some grip, riding on ice and snow always carries risks. Injuries can also occur within a herd. Regardless of how well a horseshoe is equipped, slipping can still happen. Always maintain a safe speed. |
| Threaded Inserts Embedded in the Plastic Coating | Repeated insertion and removal of the studs, as well as the accumulation of dirt in the stud holes, can impair the stability of the threaded inserts. When no studs are used, always protect the stud holes with stud blanks. Avoid repeated stud changes and only use our anti-slip studs with disc to ensure optimal pressure distribution. |
What Makes Our Studs Special?
Naturally, there are many different hoof studs available on the market.
So, what sets our
'Nordic' studs apart, and why are our studs with disk the best fit for our alternative
horseshoes?
As with our horseshoes, we prioritize quality 'Made in Germany' in our studs. For enhanced durability, our studs are hardened, and the integrated tungsten carbide pin ensures that the stud wears less quickly, even on hard ice.
The most important feature of our 'Nordic' studs is their disk.
The disk helps distribute the pressure more evenly, benefiting both the sensitive horse hoof
and the stability of the threaded insert in the plastic coating.
