product description
Speedies – Drive-in Studs for Improved Traction
Although our focus is on composite horseshoes , our company's history began with FRANK's studs and our 'Speedies' — drive-in studs for horseshoes. Today, we still offer some accessories for steel shoes, as it's important to us to support our customers effectively, regardless of their chosen hoof protection.
Features of Our Drive-In Studs:
- Durability: The hardened surface and carbide pin ensure long-lasting performance.
- Low Wear: Minimal abrasion even on hard surfaces.
- Secure Fit: The knurled design provides a firm hold in the drilled hole.
- Safety: The round shape reduces the risk of injury in a herd situation, compared to square studs.
- Easy Installation: Simple to mount.
Available Sizes:
Our Speedies are available in three heights: 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm.
Application and Safety Instructions:
DWhile the round design of our Speedies reduces injury risk within the herd, it's important to note that using any type of stud increases the risk of injury for both the herd and the individual horse. The use and monitoring of studs are the responsibility of the horse owner in collaboration with the farrier.
Installation Guide for Drive-In Studs — Achieving Better Grip in 3 Steps:
Drill the Hole: Use a standard steel drill bit with an 8.4mm diameter to create a hole in the horseshoe.
Insert the Stud: Hammer the drive-in stud into the hole in the horseshoe. If the appropriate drill bit was used, riveting or welding the stud is unnecessary.
Prepare for Use: The horseshoe equipped with drive-in studs is ready for application on the horse's hoof.
Ensuring Proper Fit and Placement of Speedies on the Hoof
The correct shape and size of the horseshoe, along with proper fitting by the farrier, are crucial, especially when using studs.
The drive-in stud can only function effectively and protect the horse from slipping without causing harm if properly positioned on the hoof.
Considerations When Using Drive-In Studs:
-
Horse's Health
Unlike removable studs, our drive-in studs typically remain in the horseshoe once installed by the farrier. It's important to recognize that while studs offer better traction and help to prevent slipping, they can also place additional strain on the horse's musculoskeletal system, particularly on hard surfaces. Decisions regarding the ideal stud type for your horse should always be made in consultation with your farrier.
-
Appropriate Height based on the intented use
The optimal height of the drive-in studs should be determined based on the intended use of the horse and prevailing ground and weather conditions.
-
Injury Risk in the Herd:
Be aware that using drive-in studs increases the risk of injury within the herd. In many open stable , the use of studs is prohibited. We recommend discussing the use of studs with the stable owner or fellow boarders.
-
Regular Inspections of Horseshoe and Studs
In addition to routinely checking the fit and condition of the horseshoe and clips, owners or riders should also inspect the drive-in studs as part of their daily routine.
-
Appropriate Speed (when Riding or Driving )
While horseshoes with drive-in studs provide better traction on various surfaces and help prevent falls, the rider / driver should always adjust speed according to ground and weather conditions, as well as the horse's gait mechanics, to avoid accidents. Regardless of the enhanced grip provided by drive-in studs, their use does not guarantee that the horse won't slip.
If you choose to use our drive-in studs, known as "Speedies," please read and follow our safety Instructions to prevent injuries. Our safety information is intended for both farriers and horse owners or riders.
