product description

Masonry Drill Bit Insert — for Cleaning Hex Holes When Changing Studs

The masonry drill bit from Projahn may not seem like a natural fit for a product range focused on horseshoes at first glance. However, it plays a small yet important role when changing studs on our Straight Bar Shoes The ability to regularly switch between studs and stud blanks is especially important when using higher studs. Our suitable models are therefore particularly popular in disciplines such as eventing and show jumping. Of course, these models are also used in other disciplines, or whenever more grip is needed due to weather conditions.

But what does all this have to do with the masonry drill bit? Especially when using higher studs, it's important for the horse's tendons and ligaments to be relieved by allowing studs to be screwed in or out as needed. During periods without studs, the stud holes should always be protected from dirt using blank studs. This not only makes it easier to install the studs later on, but also protects the thread insert of the horseshoe.

Suitable blank studs include our plastic closure plugs and the hex socket set screws, which we also commonly refer to as metal closure plugs. The latter have a hex hole for screwing in and out using the appropriate bit insert. Naturally, while the plug is in the horseshoe, the hex hole can become dirty. Before you can unscrew the hex socket set screw from the thread, the hex hole must be cleaned first — and that’s where the masonry drill bit comes in.

The Projahn Masonry Drill Bit

The masonry drill bit features a durable carbide tip that offers high resistance during both impact and rotary drilling. The 6.35 mm (1/4") hex shank ensures optimal power transmission and helps prevent slipping in the drill chuck. Thanks to its dual spiral flutes, drilling dust is effectively removed and friction within the hole is reduced.

This drill bit is ideal for precision work with cordless drills and is especially well-suited for brickwork, natural stone, aerated concrete, and sand-lime brick. That's why we consider it the perfect tool for cleaning hex holes during stud changes.

Usage and Safety Instructions for Working with the Masonry Drill Bit

In the FAQ → Safety section, we’ve compiled all essential information about safety precautions when working with various tools.

Working with the Masonry Drill Bit

Before you begin cleaning the hex hole of the hex socket set screw on the hoof using the masonry drill bit, make sure the horse is comfortable with the sound of the cordless drill. Follow standard safety procedures when working around horses and wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the task at hand. There is always a risk of slipping or small fragments flying in your direction during this type of work.

Always use compatible bit inserts with your tools and ensure that the masonry drill bit is securely clamped in the tool to prevent injuries caused by slipping or falling/loose inserts. Inspect the masonry drill bit and the cordless drill or bit holder before each use for damage, and only use the tool if it is in perfect working condition.
