product description

Relieving Pressure on the Tip of the Coffin Bone with the Sole Relief Pad

No matter how well designed horseshoes may be, and no matter how versatile the available padding materials are, there are situations where a specially adapted hoof pad is required – whether it is a wedge used to make a targeted adjustment to the hoof angle or a pad designed to completely relieve pressure from specific areas of the hoof – our new Sole Relief Pad was developed specifically for these individual requirements.

The idea of relieving pressure from specific areas of the hoof by creating a targeted cutout is not new. Many farriers adapt standard hoof pads accordingly: they cut out the relevant areas and customize the pad to suit the individual hoof.

In practice, however, this solution often remains a compromise, mainly because the thickness and/or hardness of the material is not an exact fit. Lena Bauer approached us with precisely this problem some time ago, providing the key inspiration for the development of the Sole Relief Pad.

Meet Lena Bauer, the Driving Force Behind the Idea

Since completing my training as a hoof technician – and in fact, long before that – I have been a committed user of Duplo horseshoes.

In my day-to-day work, I can find a suitable solution for almost every hoof situation with Duplos. However, I still encounter horses for which even the otherwise beneficial wide weight-bearing surface is not ideal.

These are usually horses with pathological changes, for example due to laminitis , a sunken or rotated coffin bone, or a sensitive or excessively thin hoof sole . In such cases, I previously had to make a custom insert every time to relieve pressure specifically around the sensitive area of the tip of the coffin bone.

Working together with the tooling department, this led to the idea for the Sole Relief Pad. The prefabricated pads make everyday work much easier and provide a practical basis for custom adjustments. I hope they will enable even more farriers to develop a precisely tailored solution for every horse.

Applications of the Sole Relief Pad

The Sole Relief Pad was developed to provide targeted pressure relief for a sensitive area around the tip of the coffin bone. At the same time, the crescent-shaped support bar, combined with a suitable padding material, can help support the area behind the cutout.

Sole Relief Pads in Case of Laminitis

In cases of laminitis or suspected laminitis, the position of the coffin bone should be determined using recent X-rays. This is the only way to align the cutout precisely and adapt the Sole Relief Pad to the individual situation. In such cases, it should be used in close consultation with the attending veterinarian.

Sole Relief Pads for Relieving Pressure on the Sole

When the aim is simply to relieve pressure from a sensitive or painful area of the sole, veterinary supervision is not always required. However, the hoof situation must be assessed professionally, and the Sole Relief Pad must be fitted and positioned correctly.

Custom Fitting for Targeted Pressure Relief

The Sole Relief Pad must also be adapted individually: The square pad is cut to the required shape and adjusted to fit the individual hoof and the horseshoes being used.

The horseshoe and Sole Relief Pad are shaped together on a belt sander to match the hoof shape.

Select the Sole Relief Pad to Match the Horseshoe Size

The Sole Relief Pad is available in four sizes and is designed for different horseshoe sizes. Select the size that matches the horseshoes being used – whether they are round, oval, or STS horseshoes – and then cut the Sole Relief Pad individually to the required shape.

  • Size 1: suitable for horseshoes from 66 to 98mm
  • Size 2: suitable for horseshoes from 94 to 118mm
  • Size 3: suitable for horseshoes from 118 to 146mm
  • Size 4: suitable for horseshoes from 142 to 166mm

The Sole Relief Pad is intentionally not prefabricated to fit every horseshoe size because the central cutout must be positioned correctly according to the individual hoof situation. In our view, a pre-cut version for every horseshoe size would therefore not be practical and would limit the options for precise, targeted adjustment too much.

The Sole Relief Pad is available in four sizes and is suitable for horseshoes ranging from 66mm to 166mm.

A square Sole Relief Pad with a crescent-shaped cutout to relieve the tip of the coffin bone is trimmed to the shape of the horseshoe using leather shears.

We recommend using grip shears or leather shears to adjust the outer shape.

A correctly trimmed Sole Relief Pad with a crescent-shaped cutout to relieve the tip of the coffin bone is spot-welded to the plastic horseshoe.

Working with the Sole Relief Pads

Whether during hoof care, later in the paddock, or while riding, there are certain safety instructions and injury risks that we need to bring to your attention. Our safety instructions are intended not only for farriers, but also for horse owners and riders. Please follow these instructions to help prevent injuries to both people and horses.

Should you have any further questions about using the Sole Relief Pads, we will be happy to assist you. However, please note that we cannot provide a remote diagnosis and that general information about our products, particularly regarding orthopedic or therapeutic use, cannot be applied directly to every horse. As the Sole Relief Pads are generally used as a therapeutic aid, they should only be used by hoof care professionals and, depending on the hoof condition and diagnosis, in cooperation with the attending veterinarian.

Types of Shoeing and compatible Horseshoe Models

The Sole Relief Pads are intended for use with glue-on or cast application and can be combined with almost all of our horseshoe models. The Arizona is excluded because it is not suitable for a glue-on application.

Prepare the horseshoes accordingly before further processing. Remove all knob arrays – both the colored knobs and the soft production-related ones found, for example, on the Nailless .

Quarter Clips

We generally recommend using un-clipped horseshoes. If the selected horseshoe is equipped with metal quarter clips, they should be ground off completely before use. Inserting the Sole Relief Pad reduces the area of the quarter clips that rests against the hoof wall . This may impair the stabilizing function of the clips, besides this their position may also shift unfavorably during the shoeing period.

if you remove the clips, please be aware that you cannot weld-on glue-on tabs in this area. For glue-on application, we therefore recommend Wolf Busch® glue-on tabs. Cut the tabs between the largest and the middle-size tab and position the two sections in front of and behind the area where the clip was removed.

If quarter clips are essential, a horseshoe without clips can be fitted with blueline® weld-on synthetic clips. Choose a larger size than usual to compensate for the additional thickness of the Sole Relief Pad and ensure that the clips extend far enough up the hoof wall.

Customizing the Sole Relief Pads

As with our horseshoes, the correct fit and individual adjustment are also essential when using the Sole Relief Pad. Since every hoof is different, a ready-to-use standard solution is rarely suitable.

The pad should therefore be adjusted carefully, not only around its outer edge but also in the area of the central cutout. It is often necessary to enlarge or grind the cutout because one fixed opening size cannot accommodate every individual hoof measurement within the intended horseshoe sizes.

Correct Positioning

Correct positioning of the bar is essential, particularly in cases of laminitis, but not only in these cases. The edge behind the cutout should be positioned just behind the tip of the coffin bone to provide targeted pressure relief in this area.

As the position of the coffin bone cannot be assessed reliably from the outside, its location should be determined using recent X-rays, depending on the individual hoof condition, and established in consultation with the attending veterinarian.

Checklist – Glue-On Horseshoes with the Sole Relief Pad

  • Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s safety instructions and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment .
  • Select suitable horseshoes based on shape, size, and features, as well as the Sole Relief Pad that matches the horseshoe size.
  • Remove all knobs, including both soft production-related and solid colored ones, as well as any metal quarter clips, if present.
  • Adjust the horseshoes to the individual hoof shape.
  • Position the bar of the Sole Relief Pad correctly and customize the outer shape and central cutout to suit the individual hoof condition.
  • In cases of laminitis, we recommend determining the exact position using recent X-rays.
  • Secure the Sole Relief Pad to the horseshoes with a few spot welds.
  • Adjust the glue tabs to the hoof shape and weld them to the horseshoes as usual.
  • Combine the horseshoes with a suitable padding material.
  • Make sure that no padding material escapes sideways toward the bonding surface.
  • Glue-on the horseshoe with the Sole Relief Pad as usual.

Checklist – Cast Application with the Sole Relief Pad

  • Follow the safety instructions for the casting tape and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Attach the cast hooks to the horseshoes as usual and grind off any protruding screws.
  • Combine the horseshoes with a suitable padding material.
  • Make sure that no padding material can escape sideways toward the casting tape.
  • Wrap the horseshoes with the Sole Relief Pad in casting tape as usual.
  • Make sure that the coronary band and heel bulb area remain uncovered.
  • To help prevent possible secondary damage caused by immobilization, choosing the right time for remobilization is important. The hoof mechanism and the horse’s musculoskeletal system normally work together optimally. However, if the function of individual areas is restricted by immobilizing cast horseshoes, this may cause excessive or incorrect loading in other areas. A cast application should therefore be used with great care.
